Awaiting is a piece about longing and arrival — written while I was pregnant with my first child, trying to understand what I was going through emotionally and physically, and accept that change is not just part of the process but a part of life regardless of what you choose to do or not do.
The piece is in 7/8 — not quite a Kalamatianos, but you’ll feel its distant shadow. It starts simply and builds gradually in harmony, texture and rhythm. One melodic idea reappears throughout in various forms. The beat groupings shift twice, only towards the end. It stays lyrical throughout, with contradicting dolce and agitato sections and dynamic moments expressed harmonically and rhythmically.
No contemporary techniques. No extended playing required.
A MIDI realisation is available on request.
