Impressions of CII, 2017; commissioned by Pafos European Capital 2017 for the series Espresso Solo Espressivo. Performed by Nikolas Efthymiou
Duration: 4 min
For solo viola; use of soft percussive sounds on the viola
This piece is based on Shakespeare’s sonnet 102 where the poet questions the limits of love, his love towards his lover and vice versa.
I had made the lyrics into a song for a choir and then decided to re-write for solo viola, so I was left with the Impression of the poem and my first composition.
It is a song for the viola, sometimes sobbing, sometimes gathering the thoughts and accepting reality.
The performer becomes very expressive with the piece, manipulating the tempo and the intonation if desired.
From Sonnet 102
[…] And sweets grown common lose their dear delight.
Therefore like her, I sometime hold my tongue:
Because I would not dull you with my song.
